THANK YOU TO OUR GIVE NOLA DAY SUPPORTERS!

NOLA to Angola raised over $1,750 on GiveNOLA Day, the 24-hour fundraiser hosted by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to support local non-profits. A heartfelt thank you to all who donated to our fundraising effort.

After modifying the ride in response to COVID-19, the October 2023 ride will return to its traditional three-day format, where riders camp overnight on the journey from New Orleans to the Angola State Prison. Our GiveNOLA Day funds will be used to purchase camping equipment and bikes to lend to riders without those resources. Your donations will make the ride more accessible for people who are formerly-incarcerated, who have a diversity of abilities, or who may be new to cycling altogether and still want to participate.

  • About the Cornerstone Builders’ Bus Program

About the Cornerstone Builders’ Bus Program

Cornerstone Builders’ Bus Project provides a free monthly bus service for New Orleanians who have loved ones in eight Louisiana detention facilities:

    • Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola)
    • Allen Correctional Institute
    • Dixon Correctional Institute
    • Hunt Correctional Center
    • Raymond Laborde Correctional Center
    • Rayburn Correctional Center
    • Southeast Regional Re-entry Program
    • Transitional Center for Women

At least once a month, the Bus Project rents a 55 passenger bus and makes the trek to different facilities from New Orleans, at an average cost of $1,000 per trip. There are two important objectives for the bus trips:

    1. to ensure the trips are free to those who cannot afford it
    2. the buses are coach-style buses with air conditioning and restrooms.

The rides often last more than two hours one way. The travel itself should be as stress-free and comfortable as possible for the family members.

To contact Cornerstone Builders about reserving a ride, please call 504.324.4432 during business hours.

  • The New Jim Crow Discussion Group, Part 2!

    newjimcrow

Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children (FFLIC) and Nola to Angola (NTA) are excited to host our second discussion group based on excerpts from Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Using the text as a starting point, we will explore how the prison industrial complex affects ALL our lives, across lines of race, class, and gender. Through a collaborative critical analysis of the text, we hope to bring people together to understand each other’s experiences and work together to resist criminalization in New Orleans. Come to learn, teach, listen, grow, collaborate, and find out how you can get more involved! The event will take place at the Community Book Center, 2523 Bayou Rd, from 5:30-7:30pm.

We will be reading Chapter 1 of the text this time (last time we read the prologue). Please email jesse.chanin@gmail.com to get a pdf copy of the reading. We will also have copies available at the Community Book Center the night of the event.

This is part of a series and all are welcome, regardless of if you attended the first event.

DINNER AND CHILDCARE WILL BE PROVIDED.
Please RSVP if you will need childcare.
